|Title||Yesan County Makes Giant Strides in Promoting Yesan Hwangto Apples|
- Exporting apples and processed apple products to Vietnam and Russia –
- Seeking collaborative measures in relation to the Envy apples with the ambassador of New Zealand to Korea -
Yesan County is making giant strides in promoting and exporting Yesan Hwangto apple, one of the local specialty products.
18 tons of Yesan Hwangto apples and Yesan Hwangto apple juice were exported to Vietnam through five shipments this year alone, while 20 tons of Yesan Hwangto apples were shipped to Russia on the 11th and 30th of last month.
In addition to the shipments scheduled to be sent to Vietnam, Cambodia and Russia by the end of this year, a visit by Philip Turner, the New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, has led to the anticipation of a further increase in exports.
County Governor Hwang Seon-bong welcomed Ambassador Turner and the representatives of STASIA during their visit on the 30th of last month and discussed the measures to grow and export Envy apples, a new variety of apples developed in New Zealand.
Ambassador Turner and other visitors had a chance to visit the Envy apple farms in the region as well as the Yesan Agricultural Processing Center (APC), where they checked out the local apples known for their high quality.
The recent visit has raised the anticipation for an increased export of Yesan Hwangto apples, and it is also expected that the transfer of apple cultivation know-how from New Zealand, the developer of the Envy apples, will benefit the local orchards.
In 2010, Yesan County concluded an agreement with STASIA, the company with the ownership right to the NB apple variety, the right to use the brand, and the right to sell the apples, and completed the establishment of 128 Envy apple orchards covering 100ha in area by 2017.
In the case of Envy apples, they are screened and sorted at the Yesan APC, while STASIA is responsible for buying and distributing the entire quantity. It is expected that a total of 4,000 tons of Envy apples will be produced this year.
Envy apples are one of the most preferred varieties of apples among orchards because of their large production volume per unit area and ease of cultivation, and at the same time, they are popular with consumers because they are sweet and have a beautiful color.
A county official said, “We are receiving favorable reviews about Yesan Hwangto apples from not only Vietnam and Russia, but also Taiwan and the United States. With the visit by the New Zealand Ambassador as our motivation, we will make every effort to boost export as a way to stabilize the prices in the domestic market and increase income for the local farmers.”
